오늘은 살짝 가벼운 주제로 문을 열어볼까 합니다. 바로 영어 이야기입니다.
영어에 관심 있거나 어느 정도 소통하는데 문제가 없는 분이라면, 분명 인지하고 있는 영국식 영어와 미국식 영어의 차이점 (실생활에 적용)에 대한 흥미로운 몇 가지 보기를 통해 공유하고 싶습니다.

영어권 사용자의 반은 영국식이며 나머진 반은 미국식입니다.
그럼, 대한민국에 살고 있는 우리는 과연 어느 쪽 영어일까여~
아시다시피, 전 후 미국의 교육 방식에 영향을 받아 왔기에
완전히 미국식 영어 발음과 커리큘럼으로 배워 왔습니다.
그런데 싱가포르 출장 중 만난 비지니스 파트너가 인도분이었는데
당연 영어로 소통하는데, 원활했을까요?!
답은.. 어느 정도 시간이 필요했었습니다.
여러분들도 저와 같은 시행착오를 겪기 전에
영·미식 영어가 실제 의사소통에서 어떤 차이가 있는지 유념하시기 바랍니다.
Food and Drink
식음료
Did you know that in British English, a "biscuit" is what Americans call a "cookie"?
And in American English, "chips" are what the British call "crisps".
If you're in the UK and want to order a fizzy drink, ask for it by name -
don't say "soda" like you would in the US, you will get unflavoured fizzy water!
영국에서 흔히 과자를 말할 때, '비스킷'이지만 미국에선 '쿠키'로 사용합니다.
그리고 미국의 '칩'은 영국에선 '크리스피스'라고 합니다.
만약 여러분이 영국에서 탄산음료를 주문할 때, '소다'라고 말하면
진짜 맛없는 탄산수를 받을 수도 있습니다.
Clothing

When it comes to clothing, there are also some interesting differences to note.
In British English, a "jumper" is a sweater, while in American English, a
"jumper" is a type of dress. While a vest is sleeveless and worn over a shirt in
the US, this is called a waistcoat in the UK and a vest is worn under a shirt.
미국식 영어에서는 '점퍼'는 외투라고 하지만 영국식 영어는 '스웨터'입니다.
'조끼'는 미국에서 소매가 없는 옷으로 셔츠 위에 입는 반면,
영국에서는 셔츠 안에 입으며 '웨이스트 코트'라 부릅니다.
Transportation
교통수단
Getting around can also lead to some vocabulary confusion. In British English,
a "boot" is where you put your luggage in a car, while in American English, it's
called the "trunk". If your car has broken down in the UK you lift the bonnet and
in the US, the hood? but don’t worry wheels are wheels in both countries!
And if you're in the US and need someone to drive you somewhere, you'll want
to ask for a "ride" or "lift", while in the UK, you'll ask for a "lift" or "give me a lift".
영국에서 자동차의 짐 넣는 공간을 '부트'라고 하는 반면, 미국은 '트렁크"입니다.
만약 차가 고장 나서 엔진룸을 점검할 때,
영국에서는 '보네트'를 연다고 하고 미국에서는 대신 '후드'라고 합니다.
그리고 누군가에게 운전을 요청할 때,
미국에서는 '라이드'이고 영국은 '리프트'라는 단어를 사용합니다.
화장실
And, most importantly, if you're in the US and looking for a bathroom, ask for
the "restroom" - don't say "toilet" like you would in the UK.
제일 중요한 생리 현상 해결을 위해 미국에서는 'bathroom'을 찾으면 되고,
영국에서는 'restroom'을 찾으시면 됩니다.
